England boss Roy Hodgson is so confident in his ability to manage, he claims he could coach a pub side to stop Manchester United in just six months, reports Mail Online.
He is convinced that with half-a-year’s coaching, he could teach a side of amateurs how to keep the likes of Wayne Rooney and Robin van Persie at bay.
The brash remarks, made in World Soccer magazine, will leave many wondering if Hodgson himself spent the afternoon down the local watering hole.
“You can organise a pub team not to let in six goals against Manchester United,” he said. “Give me six months and I’d organise them, if they had a half-decent goalkeeper and a couple of centre halves who can get in the way of the ball.”
But despite making management sound as easy as sticking 50 pence in a digital jukebox, Hodgson stressed that only the most qualified out there would be able to achieve such feats.
“I consider myself to be in the same position as a lawyer. I studied to be a professional. I like to think that I’m good at my profession. Just as if I was to go to a lawyer, I’d go to someone who was good and really knows his job, even if I have to pay more.
“It’s nice for people to believe some managers are born with a magical quality to transform bad into good. I don’t. It’s about leadership, practice, repetition and bloody hard work.”
After years of being compared to Dog & Duck FC, it seems England could be in for a promising World Cup after all.
