Manchester United are poised to go head to head with Manchester City for Arsenal full-back Bacary Sagna, according to the Daily Mail.
Sagna looks set to leave Arsenal after the club refused to meet his wage demands – it was reported that Sagna wants a £100,000-per-week deal, with Arsenal only willing to offer £80,000 weekly.
Manchester City are set to hold talks with the want-away defender this week, as the Frenchman looks set to pen a 4-year deal worth £100,000-per-week.
However, incoming Manchester United manager Louis Van Gaal wants to hijack the deal and will attempt to lure Sagna to Old Trafford. Van Gaal eyes Sagna as a long term solution to the right-back position and aims to add more competition for Rafael.
The French right-back is out of contract in the summer and has reportedly told teammates that he’s joining Manchester City, however, a late United offer could tempt the French international to join Van Gaal’s revolution.
United have the resources to meet Sagna’s demand and with FFP telling City they must cap their wage bill, it could result in United offering Sagna a more appealing contract. Additionally, with Zabaleta such a key player, Sagna will not be guaranteed a starting spot at the Etihad.
Sagna has appeared 284 times for the Gunners, racking up 22 assists and five goals. Arsenal could move for Southampton’s Callum Chambers to replace Sagna.
