Senior UN officials have strongly condemned an attack against two international journalists in Afghanistan on Friday, which left one dead and the other wounded.

The Associated Press journalists, Anja Niedringhaus and Kathy Gannon, were shot in the Tani district of Khost province in eastern Afghanistan where they were covering the upcoming elections.

The Director-General of the United Nations Office in Geneva, Kassym-Jomart Tokayev expressed shock at the death of Ms. Niedringhaus, a Pulitzer prize-winning photographer.

She had been covering the UN from its Geneva headquarters since 2002.

Meanwhile, Ján Kubiš, the Secretary-General’s Special Representative and head of the UN Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA), expressed his outrage at what he described as a “terror attack on civilians”.

Mr. Kubiš said the journalists were just doing their job of informing the world about how Afghan citizens were exercising their right to vote.

He added that this attack was a huge loss for Afghanistan since both journalists were highly respected and very well known for their professionalism and “love and appreciation of the Afghan people.”
