Sources can reveal that Juan Mata WILL leave Chelsea this month and Manchester United are currently in discussions with the player and the club over a blockbuster January transfer.

Mata has been named Chelsea’s player of the season the last two years, but since Jose Mourinho’s return to the club the Spanish playmaker has found his playing opportunities severely limited by the Portuguese manager.

It was said that Mourinho took a disliking to Mata’s work rate on the pitch and that he didn’t fit in with the style he wanted to play, preferring instead to select the likes of Oscar, Eden Hazard, Willian and Andre Schurrle due to the shifts these players would put in on the pitch.

Regardless of the reasons behind the snub, sources close to the club can confirm that Mata has asked to leave Chelsea this month in order to safeguard his spot in the Spanish national team for the upcoming World Cup, and that Manchester United are currently leading the race for his signature.

David Moyes is scouring the globe for world class talent that can improve his faltering Manchester United side and a creative midfielder is top of the Scot’s priorities this month. Moyes also wants a central defender, a left-back and possibly another midfielder, but many a pundit have commented on United’s lack of invention and creativity in the middle of the park so far this season and Mata would fit the bill for Moyes nicely.

There is also a murmur from our sources that the deal could have an impact on the likelihood of a transfer leading to Wayne Rooney joining Chelsea.

Rooney was the subject of two failed bids from Chelsea in the summer and the England star only has 18 months left to run on his contract and has so far rejected the club’s overtures to sit down and discuss a new deal.

Rooney’s form has been one of the highlights of Manchester United’s season so far and the club would be loathe to lose him to one of their Premier League rivals, but if Chelsea agree to sell Mata to United, the Red Devils are said to be warming up to the idea that they would allow Rooney to move to Chelsea in return.
