It is being reported in numerous newspapers today that Arsenal may trigger Julian Draxler’s £40 million release clause from Schalke.
It has recently been said that Theo Walcott will miss the rest of the season with a knee injury and subsequently, Arsene Wenger is looking for a suitable replacement as the Gunners look to challenge for the Premier League title.
According to the Daily Star, ‘Jan Aage Fjortoft, the man who first broke news of Mesut Ozil’s move to Arsenal via his Twitter account, believes the deal will be done.’
Draxler reportedly impressed during a recent visit to Arsenal’s training complex and news of his £40 million release clause has stirred rumours of a move to the Emirates.
Despite this, Schalke remain hopeful that Draxler will remain at the club, but as stated on ESPN this morning, ‘sporting director, Horst Heldt, admits they may be powerless to keep him.
Before Arsenal fans get too excited, however, the clause does mean Draxler can leave, but not until summer, so unless a bid is accepted by Schalke, they would have to wait until the end of the season if they are to trigger his £40 million clause.
As ESPN have also reported, ‘Sidney Sam has agreed to join Schalke in the summer’, and this may mean that Draxler is forced to leave if he wants consistent first team football.
£40 million does seem excessive for a player who is only 20 years old, but as Arsenal look to strengthen their side and push for the title in the next few years, his skill and versatility may warrant investment.
